Snoring may not look like such a big deal, and in fact it can seem quite natural. But the thing is that snoring not only keeps your partner awake, but it can also interfere with your own sleep as well. Snoring happens when the sleeper is not able to get enough air during sleep.

Snoring is often ignored as a mild irritant, but it may in fact a condition called obstructive sleep apnoea. If you or your partner suffer from snoring, come in for a consultation at The Caringbah Dentists.

Anti-Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder that poses harm to your health. Sleep apnoea is a more serious form of snoring where there is a blockage of air flow and a drastic drop in the oxygen sent to your brain and heart. If you listen to obstructive sleep apnoea, it may sound like loud snoring punctuated by some moments of silence. During these silences, the breathing has in fact completely stopped because of some physical obstruction in the airway.

There are lot of similarities between chronic snoring and sleep apnoea, and therefore it can be difficult to diagnose. You need an expert check-up to determine whether your snoring is causing grave harm to your health.

You need professional care to minimise the harmful effects caused by obstructive sleep apnoea.

Dental devices to treat sleep apnoea

It is possible to use oral or dental devices to treat exercise snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea. There are many options for these dental devices and our dentist can recommend one that suits your specific requirements.

These devices are absolutely safe to use, so you don’t need to worry at all. The device resembles a mouth guard in its appearance and can force the lower jaw down a little to keep the airway open. This prevents obstruction of air during breathing and ensures continuous supply of oxygen to your brain and heart.

Appointment Booking

Due to the increasing rates of COVID-19, our priority is to protect the health and safety of our patients and the wider community. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) has advised all dental practices nationwide to move to level 2 restrictions – that is, all non-essential treatment should be postponed until 30 April.

Because of this, we will be only seeing patients on an emergency-only basis until 30 April, or until advised differently by the ADA. We will be available for phone consultations, help remotely triage emergencies and also post out prescriptions for medications and dental products. Please call if you need an emergency appointment, We will only be seeing patients who have trauma, infection or are in pain.

If you do need to attend our surgery, we have implemented additional hygiene precautions including the use of a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse, regular disinfection of all surfaces, and hand sanitiser for mandatory use for all patients entering our premises. We will also book emergencies with a 30 minute waiting period in between patients, to maintain social distancing guidelines.

This is a difficult and uncertain time for all of us. We take our contribution to flattening the curve seriously, as well as our commitment to your safety. We are so grateful for your understanding and support.

Stay well, stay safe.
